Understanding Forgery

Understanding Forgery Under Mississippi Law

Forgery in Mississippi occurs when a person intentionally makes, alters, forges, or counterfeits a document or writing with intent to defraud another person or entity. This can include forged signatures, altered contracts, falsified deeds, court documents, and other written instruments that affect a person’s rights, property, or legal obligations.

Under Mississippi’s criminal statutes, forgery is a serious offense that can be charged as a felony depending on the value of the instrument involved and the nature of the alleged fraud. Whether the document is an official certificate or a financial record, Mississippi law treats it as forgery if it is false and used to deceive another.
